We are offering for this listing a rare antiquarian 1st
edition book entitled “Manitou” by Margaret Holmes Bates writing as “Margaret Holmes” (1844-?) She was born in Fremont, Ohio and moved with her German parents and siblings to Rochester, Indiana in 1858 where she began her schooling. She married Chas. Austin Bates in 1865 and moved to Indianapolis where she lived for 25 years, writing and teaching before moving to New York. In 1881 she wrote her first novel about a French family living near Rochester, the location of Indiana's Lake Manitou, in 1793. The family shuns civilization and interacts and lives in peace with the Potawatomi Indians until several family members are poisoned by the tribe's witch doctor, Naoman. This is a romantic novel with philosophical and social opinions of the author hidden among the words. She is listed in “Who's Who in America.” This book was published by Carlon and Hollenbeck in 1881 (first edition). It has a cloth cover stamped in front and spine in gold with red edged pages. There is some water damage to the back cover that doesn't go through to the inside and a closed tear in the cover on the back spine of about 3.” Inside front cover has a split between cover and fly leaf. Please examine the photos carefully. There are 222 pages plus flyleaves.
